Welcome to the WEA's

Exploring Composition and Creativity course

Post production - challenge for Graham

Send me a untouched RAW file by midnight Thursday  and I will try a before and after look, if possible. A JPEG image is also okay but there is always less possibility to optimise it.

Choose something you may be dissatisfied with– Say what the problem you would like solved it is - if you know
-  send it to photolessons@tayloron.net
-   I have sent files of 24 MB to this address and my provider (Internode) does not seem to have a problem. If you can't send the file do let me know and we may have to look at alternatives such as Dropbox.

Caveats
-  I may have to be selective depending on how many I receive.
-   Secondly, you give permission for me to use the image for teaching purposes

-   you may have created a great image that I, at least, cannot improve upon!

Workshop 1

In this session we will look at some of the basic ideas behind both composition and generating ideas for making images. We will also look at developing skills to critique your images in order to learn from them and improve your work. Finally we will try some practical exercises.

Please note that the course is about Exploring Composition and Creativity. Inevitably there will be technical explanations for some effects but the main focus will be on getting ideas and composing pleasing images. Therefore any camera will be fine. The best camera is the one you have with you when you need it so just learning the capabilities of your phone camera is a great start.

What to bring
  1. A camera
We will try a few exercises in the workshop so you may wish to bring a camera, be it an iPhone, iPad or other tablet, a basic point-and-shoot, a compact camera or a DSLR with your favourite lens. Ensure you have a charged battery and memory cards, etc.

  2. Up to three images - this is optional
    These will be critiqued
by the class. Please do not bring more than three images as we have time constraints.
Bring these on a named USB stick, ie, your name, so it may be returned. Place in a folder labeled WEA_your_name

Note that these do not necessarily have to be your own photos. You may find some image that really appeals and you would like discussed.

Homework!
  • You will be given a number of ideas/exercises you could try out between the workshops. You will choose one so you may want to set some time aside for this.
I trust  doing this will be beneficial for your learning but will be entirely optional of course.

  • You will also have an opportunity to select some more images for the second critiquing.

You may wish to bookmark this page as it will be updated with a range of resources during the course.
