Reflect

A critical component of any learning is getting helpful and accurate feedback. This applies to the more advanced as much as to novices. Even the best people, in any field, find help from a mentor or coach can improve performance. All that is required is a real desire to improve on your current level of understanding.

A ‘Conversation’ is an opportunity to get informed and objective feedback on your photography from a ‘critical friend’ and guide. We can look at what you have achieved and, more importantly, what you would like to be able to achieve. Then we can consider possible pathways to achieving your goals.

A ‘Conversation’ can help you:

  • appreciate your achievements
  • focus on your needs
  • identify your goals
  • understand your camera
  • identify gaps in your knowledge
  • become aware of useful resources
  • develop your ability to critique your own work
  • provide practical suggestions and develop your own learning tasks.

Might be about:

  • what is the best mode to use?
  • what settings do I need to worry about?
  • how can I effectively organise my photo libraries?
  • how might an image I have be improved? (Bring files on USB – preferably RAW format)
  • what is RAW?
  • how might this composition be improved?
  • what does this do?
  • I’m interested in …? How might I start?
  • what do you think of this?
  • what can I do about my reluctance to photograph people?
  • something I would like to know about it is …?

The Conversation

  • will take about 75 minutes and costs $50. (Longer available by negotiation.)
  • you decide what you would like to bring to the table. Typically this would include a portfolio of images you wish to discuss (prints and/or on a USB) and, if applicable, any equipment you wish to understand more about.
  • is usually face-to-face but might be conducted online, E.g. by sharing images on Skype.
  • Value for money? This service from a retailer is $100 first hour, $190 for two hours.
